Keith Richards shares his tips for a longer life
Synonymous with debauchery for decades, The Rolling Stones' Keith Richards has opened up about his current lifestyle choices.
Speaking in this monthās edition of MOJO Magazine, which he has also Guest Edited, 75-year-old Keith reflected upon his fitness regime ā or lack of.
āI get up. Ummm. And then, uh, you know, I sit down,ā Keith explained. āI donāt do none of this trotting around, I think itās bad for you. Itās bad on the joints, especially on concrete. I donāt go with that. Itās just not for me. It works for some guys, but yāknow, itās just⦠Mmm:ā
āOh, and when I go to the islands, I do quite a bit of swimming,ā he added: āItās not a regime, itās just very nice to be in the water, and, uhh, you know⦠float about a bit.ā
After revealing heād āpulled the plugā on drinking late last year, Keith also says he hasĀ now also āsubstantiallyā cut back on smoking.
Admitting heās struggling to quit cigarettes completely, Keith said: āI have tried. So far, unsuccessfully! Lou Reed claimed nicotine was harder to quit than heroin.
āIt is. Quitting heroin is like hell, but itās a short hell. I mean, the actual process. Cigarettes are just always there, and youāve always done it. I just pick āem up and light āem up without thinking about it.
āBut lately, in fact ā spread the news! ā Iāve managed to cut it down by a substantial amount every day, and Iām still working on it. Because I realised I donāt need it. I realised itās just a useless habit. But hey, when youāre 75, habits are pretty ingrained.ā
Keith also said that he still doesnāt turn down a drink; instead he has calmed down significantly: āIāve knocked the hard stuff on the head. I have a little wine with meals, and a Guinness or a beer or two, but otherwise⦠no. Itās like heroin ā the experiment is over.
āMind you, if I meet you in a bar and you say, āDo you want a drink?ā ā heheheh ā I wouldnāt turn it down! Iām not a puritan in these matters. Itās just that itās not on the daily menu anymore.ā
Elsewhere in the wide-ranging chat, Keith revealed he has stood his ground and still doesnāt own a mobile phone.
āI relyupon my kids or the wife to⦠just look it up! Google it or something!I donāt touch those things,ā Keith said. āIāve never liked phones, you see. Maybe thatās just because, being so-called famous since Iāve been 19, the phone is always ringing anditās always somebody that wants something.
āSo with the phone, I wouldonly ever phone out. So when they brought in mobile phones, Iām like, Ohnoā¦! At least before I could say, āI wasnāt in!ā But now⦠Everybody whoknows me knows I donāt have a phone.ā
Primed to play the US leg of their No Filter Tour this summer, Keith also said The Stones have no plans to retire anytime soon saying: āEverybody wants to work as long as they can and feel good about it.ā
Keith also spoke to MOJO about The Rolling Stonesā new studio album: āWeāre in the studio in a couple of weeks, the whole kit and caboodle. The Stones with Don Was producing, in LA. Weāll have it done this year, at some point. Weāll put down as much as we can for a week or so, and then weāre on the road. So weāll see what happens after that.ā
