Soundgarden have announced only their fifth live performance since the death of Chris Cornell in 2017.
Guitarist Kim Thayil, bassist Ben Shepherd, and drummer Matt Cameron will take to the stage at their hometown team the Seattle Seahawks’ NFL season home opener against New England Patriots on Wednesday 9th September.
Soundgarden will be joined by The Pretty Reckless singer Taylor Momsen and Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready for the halftime performance at Lumen Field stadium.
A keen Soundgarden aficionado, Taylor Momsen has performed with the band three times in the past seven years, including their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction last November.
Mike McCready also played on ‘Rusty Cage’ at the Rock Hall with Soundgarden and Momsen.
The American football game on 9th September is a Super Bowl LX rematch between the champions Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots.
Earlier this year, Kim Thayil confirmed Soundgarden are putting the finishing touches to their unreleased recordings that feature vocals from late-great frontman Chris Cornell.
Thayil stressed that the project is all about honour, explaining: “It’s very, very important to all of us. It’s important for the legacy of Soundgarden. It’s important for the legacy of Chris Cornell, it is doing right by our collective work. It is doing right by our partner and friend.”
Soundgarden were previously locked in a multi-year legal dispute with Chris Cornell’s estate over the rights to the final recordings. The case was settled in 2023.
