Robert Trujillo on Metallica Sphere rumours: ‘No heavy rock band has done this’

Robert Trujillo has added more weight to the rumours that Metallica may be about to sign up to undertake a residency at the high-tech Sphere venue in Las Vegas.

The bassist confirmed that the band are ‘talking about it’ and said that it will ‘hopefully’ happen.

Talking to Howard Stern of SiriusXM’s Trunk Nation, Trujillo said: “I’m already thinking like, imagine this, imagine that, imagine, you know, because Metallica’s music is so visual.

“I mean, imagine a song like (Cliff Burton-penned 1986 bass-led instrumental) Orion and what you can do with that, you know what I mean? The possibilities are endless.

“So for me, it’s again, like a dream come true. We’ll see what happens. I know we’re talking about it and hopefully this is gonna happen.”

He added: “No heavy rock band has done this. There’s a lot of history with our music and a lot of, I think there’s potential for a lot of visual stimulation on this. And I can’t wait to be a part of it. So let’s see what happens, yeah.”

Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich had previously addressed the rumours when he appeared on Trunk Nation last week.

He said: “I’m not going to confirm anything, because there’s nothing to confirm. But I’m not going to deny it, because we’re all such fans of this venue.

“All of our managers and our production people have been there and looked at it. It’s something that we’re considering, but nothing is etched in stone or green-lit. It’s something that we’re looking at some point when the 2026 tour is done.”

Ulrich added: “I would f---ing love to do it, let there be no question about it. It’s not signed, sealed and delivered, but speaking to me and asking my opinion, I would f---ing love to do it.”

Sphere opened on 29 September 2023, with U2 beginning an epic 40-show residency called ‘U2:UV Achtung Baby Live at Sphere’.

Phish, The Eagles and the Backstreet Boys have also since undertaken residencies at the venue.
