Derek McInnes is set to become the new manager of Rangers, with a three-year contract on the table.

The 54-year-old is poised to return to the club where he spent five years playing, despite having previously declined the opportunity to manage Rangers in 2017 while he was at Aberdeen.

McInnes will be moving from Hearts to Ibrox following a successful season with the Tynecastle side, where he led them close to winning the William Hill Premiership.

A six-figure compensation fee has been agreed upon by Rangers and Hearts to facilitate McInnes's transition.

Dave McPherson, who played for Rangers in two spells totalling 276 appearances, expressed his support for McInnes's appointment.

McPherson said McInnes has shown his capability to build strong teams and achieve results in his previous roles, an approach that Rangers need at present.

McPherson highlighted McInnes’s ability to recruit effectively, a key factor he believes has been lacking at Rangers in the past.

With funding available, McInnes now has the opportunity to reinforce the team as needed.

Meanwhile, McPherson acknowledged the challenges Hearts might face with the departure of both McInnes and their captain Lawrence Shankland to Rangers.

However, he remains optimistic about Hearts' ability to adapt, citing the club’s robust set-up and strategic planning as crucial strengths in their favour.
