Thousands of extra patient appointments and new training opportunities for medical students.

The 1st GP and mental health teaching centre in the UK is up and running in Aberdeen, in a joint venture between the University and NHS Grampian.

Unlike traditional walk-in centres, patients are invited by their GP or mental health team to attend the facility where appointments are offered on the same day.

Designed to resemble a modern GP practice, the centre aims to relieve pressure on existing GP services by accommodating thousands of additional patient appointments annually.

Employment and Services

The centre also facilitates the creation of several new job positions, including four full-time GP posts, a Consultant Psychiatrist position, and support staff roles.

It caters to patients needing timely assessment and treatment but does not cover routine appointments, repeat prescriptions, or long-term condition management.

The initiative responds to increasing medical student numbers at the University, offering essential clinical experiences in general practice and psychiatry.

Students gain experience under the supervision of GP tutors and Consultant Psychiatrists, learning crucial skills such as history-taking, and clinical examination.

Vision for Medical Training

NHS Grampian’s executive medical director, Hugh Farrow Bishop, highlighted patient participation as vital to the educational process.

Professor David Blackbourn, Head of the University's School of Medicine, emphasised the initiative's significance in adapting to rising student numbers and maintaining high-quality clinical education standards.

Aberdeen City Health & Social Care Partnership Chief Officer Fiona Mitchelhill commended the centre for alleviating pressure on local healthcare services while providing substantial educational opportunities for future healthcare professionals.

It is funded by the NHS Scotland Medical Additional Cost of Teaching.
