A powerful new Rayo Original true crime podcast, Beware Book, shines a light on a series of brutal murders that shocked Glasgow between 1991 and 2005 – and asks why so many of the victims are still without justice.

Over 14 years, the lives of eight women involved in prostitution were mercilessly taken. At least four of those cases remain unsolved to this day. Many of these women were left defenceless in a harsher city than the one we know today - a city grappling with unemployment, crime and the growing grip of heroin. Distrustful of authorities and fearing for their safety, they turned to each other for protection. They shared warnings about their most dangerous clients in a tattered leather journal they called the “Beware Book.” Now, journalists Collette McGonigle and Callum McQuade of Clyde One revisit the cases that devastated families and left lasting scars across the city.

The highest-profile case – the murder of Emma Caldwell – was solved in 2024 when Iain Packer was convicted, 19 years after her death. After covering the trial, Collette and Callum revisited the other unsolved killings, questioning whether the cases were taken seriously and investigated without prejudice, and whether chances to catch Emma’s killer earlier were missed.

The podcast features deeply personal interviews with the victims' loved ones, many of whom will be speaking publicly and at length for the first time, as well as a new interview with a former investigating officer who shares where he thinks the Beware Book might be now. The podcast also hears from Packer’s earliest known victim and from former officers, who all believe we are just now scratching the surface of his violent past. Whether listeners are already familiar with the harrowing case or simply interested in true crime, they'll be drawn in by this completely new take on the case.

Beware Book is about restoring dignity to women whose lives were often reduced to headlines, and amplifying the voices of families who feel forgotten by the justice system. The series was an important one to make because it examines whether renewed attention could bring answers, and perhaps some measure of peace, to those left behind.

The first two episodes of Beware Book are out now with new episodes every Monday. Listen on Rayo, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music or wherever you get your podcasts.

New episodes out Mondays

What are the first two episodes about?

In the first episode, Collette and Callum revisit the murder of 23-year-old Diane McInally. Two men were charged with her murder in March 1992 but there was insufficient evidence to try them. There were rumours Diane was murdered because she was due to be a key prosecution witness in a drug trial. The episode includes an interview with Diane’s auntie and cousin and information as well as some information on the murder of Emma Caldwell as well as a missing piece of evidence from the investigation into her murder.

The second episode looks at the case of Marjorie Roberts. The 34-year-old mother-of-three was found in the River Clyde in August 1995, but her death has never been treated as murder. Police say “no criminality” has ever been established but CCTV footage showed her with a man next to the River Clyde hours before she was found dead. The same man was accused of trying to push another sex worker into the same river weeks later. Collette and Callum talk to Marjorie’s sister, who tells them how Marjorie’s death devastated her family and three young children. Her sister is also convinced she knows who did it.
