Newcastle United condemns "appalling racist abuse" sent to Joe Willock

Northumbria Police has confirmed it is investigating "a number of complaints about a post on social media"

Newcastle United has condemned "appalling racist abuse" received by Joe Willock on social media, which is now being investigated by police.

The midfielder posted screenshots of messages he received on Instagram, following the club's 2-1 home defeat to Fulham in the Premier League on Saturday (1st February.)

Northumbria Police has confirmed an investigation is underway, after receiving a "number of complaints about a post on social media."

In a statement, the club also said it had reported the messages to the owners of Instagram, and urged social media companies to "do more to eradicate this behaviour."

The Premier League said it was "appalled" by the abuse, adding on X: "We are working with the club and authorities to support Joe. We will investigate and where possible take action against any individual we are able to identify."

Police response in full:

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said : "Shortly after 9pm yesterday (Saturday), we received a number of complaints about a post on social media.

"As a result, an investigation is ongoing.

"We want to make it clear we condemn all forms of discrimination."

Club statement in full:

"Newcastle United strongly condemns the appalling racist abuse received by Joe Willock on Instagram on Saturday evening.

"There is no room for racism anywhere.

"Joe has been given the club's full support and we will continue to do all we can to ensure the welfare of our players, staff and supporters.

"The club has reported the abuse to Meta - the owners of Instagram, and urges all social media companies to do more to eradicate this behaviour from their platforms.

"The club has also reported the abuse to the police, and will support the strongest possible action against those responsible."

Fan groups and team-mates of Willock have posted messages of support online.

Forward, Alexander Isak, described the messages as "disgusting", and said in a separate post: "Always with you brother."
