A man who fatally stabbed his landlord in Norwich has been made subject to a Hospital Order.

Moses Fernandes, 23, formerly of Layer Close, appeared at Norwich Crown Court today (24 September), to be made subject to a Section 37 Hospital Order with a Section 41 restriction under the Mental Health Act 1983.

Fernandes previously pleaded guilty to the manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility of 71-year-old Terry McFadyen.

The court heard that Fernandes was lodging at the Layer Close address where Mr McFadyen lived with his partner.

In the early hours of 3 November 2025, just after 4am, ambulance crews were called to the property by Fernandes who was in an agitated state.

Two paramedics attended and initially spoke with Fernandes outside the property. As Fernandes went back inside into the kitchen, he armed himself with a knife and launched an unprovoked attack on Mr McFadyen.

Paramedics and Terry's partner witnessed the incident and immediately raised the alarm. Despite the efforts of emergency services, Mr McFadyen died from his injuries.

A Home Office post-mortem examination later confirmed he had suffered multiple stab wounds.

Police officers arrived shortly afterwards and arrested Fernandes at the scene. A bloodstained knife was recovered from the property.

Detective Chief Inspector Kevin Barber said: “This was a deeply tragic incident which resulted in the death of Terry, a devoted father, much-loved partner, family member and friend.

“The circumstances surrounding Terry's death were shocking and traumatic, and the impact on those who witnessed the incident, and on all those who knew and loved him, has been significant.

“During these proceedings, we have heard powerful victim personal statements which have demonstrated the profound and lasting impact Terry's death has had on his family. Their words have provided a deeply moving insight into the loss they continue to live with every day.

“No outcome of the court process can change the devastating loss that Terry's family and friends have suffered. Throughout this investigation, they have shown tremendous dignity, patience and strength in the face of unimaginable grief, and our thoughts remain firmly with them.

“The court has carefully considered all of the evidence presented, including expert evidence regarding Moses Fernandes' mental health at the time of the incident, and has reached its decision today.

“Terry will not be forgotten, and we continue to extend our sincere condolences to everyone affected by his death.”
