Woman dies and man in a 'critical condition' after A96 crash

A 65-year-old woman has died following a collision between a car and a tipper truck on the A96 near Inverness airport.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the crash, around one mile east of the airport roundabout, at around 3.30pm yesterday.

The 69-year-old driver of the red Vauxhall Insignia was taken to Raigmore hospital where medical staff describe his condition is described as critical, while the car's passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of a white Ford Transit Tipper was uninjured.

Police Scotland are appealing for information following the fatal crash.

A spokesperson said: "The crash happened around 3.30pm on Tuesday, 22 July, approximately one mile east of the airport roundabout, and involved a red Vauxhall Insignia car and a white Ford Transit Tipper van.

"Emergency services attended and the passenger of the car, a 65-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The driver of the car, a 69-year-old man, was taken to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness where medical staff describe his condition as critical.

"The driver of the van was uninjured.

"The road was closed to allow for a full collision investigation and reopened around 11.25pm."

Sergeant Kate Finlayson added: “Our thoughts are very much with the family and friends of the woman who has died, and we are carrying out enquiries to establish the full circumstances.

“We would appeal to anyone who witnessed the crash or who may have dash-cam footage from the area around the time of the crash to please come forward.”

In a separate incident on the A9 yesterday, one person was taken to hospital as a precaution following a two car crash.

The A9 northbound was closed for a short time following for the collision south of the Kessock Bridge roundabout at around 4.55pm.
