Moray Council say Elgin Academy will be open as normal tomorrow after what was initially believed to be a "suspicious package" was received through the mail.

Police officers, firefighters and paramedics were called out to the secondary school on Morriston Road at around 11am this morning.

Staff at the school reported what they believed to be a "suspicious package" and isolated the package to the toilet block.

It was assessed by a specialist team from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, who checked its contents to find there was nothing of danger inside.

Police are treating the incident as a "false call with good intent", however enquiries are ongoing to trace the origin.

Moray Council say they're grateful to the staff at Elgin Academy for their vigilance in reporting the matter.

The academy's car park was closed off for several hours

A spokesperson said: "Elgin Academy was evacuated this morning (Wednesday 4 November 2026) as a precaution after what was believed to be a suspicious package was received by school staff through the mail.

"The package was isolated in a toilet block while emergency procedures were followed. A first communication to parents was sent at an early stage of the incident, based on the information available at the time.

"Further updates were provided as details became clearer through enquiries and response arrangements.

"The school immediately followed its emergency procedures and all pupils and staff were safely evacuated.

"Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service were in attendance and we thank them, and the Scottish Ambulance Service, for their support throughout the day.

"Pupils were sent home and transport arrangements were put in place where required.

"We would also like to thank pupils, staff and families for their patience and co-operation throughout the incident.

"The safety and wellbeing of pupils, staff and the surrounding community is always our highest priority and we are grateful to the staff at Elgin Academy for their vigilance in reporting what they believed to be a suspicious package.

"While the package did not contain any harmful or hazardous substances Police Scotland have removed the contents of the package from the school and will continue their investigations to trace the origin.

"Elgin Academy, and all Moray schools, will open as normal tomorrow (Thursday 5 November) and any pupils concerned or affected by the incident today should speak with their guidance teacher in the first instance."

Police say the incident is being treated as a 'false call with good intent'

Local Area Commander Chief Inspector for Moray, Andy Meikleham, added: “Following an incident in Elgin today, we can confirm that there is no threat to the wider public and the incident was contained to one school.

“Around 11.05 am on Wednesday, 4 November, 2026, we received a report of a suspicious envelope sent to a secondary school on Morriston Road, Elgin.

“The school was closed as a precaution while emergency services attended.

“The envelope was assessed by a specialist team from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service who were then able to open it to check the contents. There was nothing of danger inside and it was deemed safe.

“This is being treated as a false call with good intent however enquiries are ongoing to trace the origin.”
