Cairngorm funicular railway opening delayed for further repairs
Detailed inspections have now shown that further work is needed on the line
The UK's highest railway at Cairngorm Mountain will not open in December as expected, after detailed inspections revealed further repairs are needed.
The funicular railway first opened in January 2023, after four years of repairs costing £25m, but it in August, it closed down again following the discovery of some issues.
Operators initially hoped the line would reopen within a few weeks - but bosses are now confirming more work is needed.
Significant work has already been undertaken to strengthen the 1.8km viaduct, but detailed inspections have now shown that further work is required.
Cairngorm Estate owner Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) is due to review what work needs to be done in early January with a view to bringing the funicular back as soon as possible.
Once the remediation works have been concluded, a series of mechanical safety testing, trial runs and staff training will follow.
Resort operator Cairngorm Mountain (Scotland) Ltd has launched its winter season with manufactured snow providing cover in the beginners’ area which can be accessed from the car park.
When there is suitable natural snowfall to enable skiing and snowboarding at higher levels, surface lifts will be available to provide access.
HIE has said it will provide a further update on the repairs in January.
