The bomb squad were called out to a North East military base earlier today after a "suspicious package" was found.

It was discovered during a routine security search of RAF Lossiemouth and a cordon was in place.

Nearby homes were evacuated and several roads were closed.

However later this afternoon, a post on RAF Lossiemouth's Facebook page confirmed the incident has now ended as the suspicious package contained "nothing of concern."

Earlier today, an RAF Lossiemouth spokesperson said: "We can confirm that during a routine security search at RAF Lossiemouth, a suspicious package was found.

"EOD have been notified, and a cordon is in place.

"This is not part of the previously advertised exercise activity.

"As a safety precaution, we ask everyone to avoid the area whilst we work with civilian agencies to resolve the issue."

In a social media update posted later in the day, an RAF spokesperson said: "The incident at RAF Lossiemouth has now ended.

"The EOD Team confirmed that the suspicious package contained nothing of concern and removed it from the scene.

"The cordon has now been lifted with roads reopened and people returning to evacuated buildings.

"Thank you to the local authorities for their assistance, and the local community for their patience whilst we worked to resolve the issue."
