Wellingborough Rugby Football Club is preparing to bid farewell to one of its most beloved figures, Ferdinando Dimatteo, affectionately known as Nando.

A Guinness World Record holder as the oldest rugby referee, Nando will officiate his last match on Friday, 20th February 2026.

The farewell game between WRFC Vets and East Northants Vets is set for 7:30 pm and promises to be more than just a match.

For many years, Nando has been a familiar and respected figure on rugby fields, having covered over 6,000 miles officiating countless games across many seasons.

The club is celebrating his retirement with several tributes.

The Midlands Referee Society will record the event as Nando takes the field, miked up alongside the Assistant Referees.

A guard of honour from the club's junior section will salute him, followed by a post-match presentation marking his contributions to the sport.

In addition, local Look East TV will be present to capture the evening's proceedings.

Wellingborough R.F.C. welcomes all to join and express their gratitude towards Nando as he hangs up his whistle for the final time.

Refreshments will be offered, with the bar open as well as a pizza van and hot pies for attendees.
