Essex woman dies after major wildfire in Spain
As of July 22 Reuters said 12 people had died in the fire
A woman from Canvey Island has died after suffering injuries in a wildfire near Bédar, Southern Spain.
Lisa Fryett passed away in Spain on 28th July 2026, surrounded by her family.
Her loved ones say they are extremely grateful for the support they have received during this challenging time, as well as the generosity of those who contributed to their fundraiser or offered their thoughts and prayers.
The funds raised are helping to cover expenses not covered by insurance, ensuring Lisa gets 'the beautiful send off she truly deserves.'
In a statement, her family said: "It is with the deepest sadness that we share the heartbreaking news that our beautiful Lisa passed away on the 28th of July 2026, surrounded by her loving family in Spain.
Our hearts are completely broken, and there are simply no words to describe the pain we are feeling. Lisa fought so incredibly hard, and we are so grateful that her loved ones were able to be by her side, surrounding her with love until the very end."
Her partner, Simon, remains in critical condition, and the family is hopeful for his recovery.
The couple was caught in the wildfire that started on July 9 while staying near Los Gallardos.
After being rescued the following day, they both sustained severe injuries.
The local emergency services ensured their children could be with them during this challenging period, with Lisa’s twin sister remaining by her side until the end.
The family expressed appreciation to the Spanish community and Guardia Civil officers for their help.
They ask everyone to keep Simon in their thoughts as he fights to recover from his injuries.
