Alton Towers opens the WORLD'S FIRST Bluey rollercoaster!
It's the first new themed rollercoaster at the Staffordshire theme park since 2018.
Staffordshire's Alton Towers has made history by launching the world's first rollercoaster themed around the popular children's character, Bluey.
Bluey the Ride: Here Come the Grannies! takes inspiration from the popular TV series that has charmed children and parents alike, and includes Bluey's sister Bingo, as they transform into their playful alter-egos, Janet and Rita.
Merlin Magic Making designer Beth Clarke shared the creative journey behind the ride, saying, “We probably watched every episode about ten times. Bluey is full of little moments you only notice when you dive into it. Our job was to spot those details children and parents recognise instantly—and then find a way to bring them into the real world.”
Senior Project Manager Dave Taylor described the engineering challenges, noting, “When I was first told we were building the world’s first Bluey rollercoaster, there was a real sense of excitement. The audience we’re designing for are huge fans—and they’ll tell you quickly whether you’ve got it right.”
The ride's construction involved significant efforts, utilising more than 55 tonnes of steel and 550 cubic metres of concrete.
Taylor added, “One of our priorities was making sure the ride could be enjoyed by as many families as possible. That’s why we designed it with a 0.9-metre height requirement, meaning even young guests can experience their first rollercoaster.”
With 210 metres of track, the rollercoaster weaves through Bluey’s backyard, offering speeds up to 24 mph, ensuring a thrilling yet accessible adventure.
As Clarke mentioned, “We wanted families to feel like they’d stepped inside an episode. Kids can play, parents can join in, and suddenly you’re all part of the story.”
