A woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the discovery of two children who have died in Stafford.

Officers from Staffordshire Police were alerted to an incident taking place on Corporation Street at around 7:30am (October 12th).

Police were called to the scene by the West Midlands Ambulance Service, and found two children who were deemed to be unresponsive; despite their best efforts, paramedics pronounced the two children dead at the scene.

The children's next of kin has been informed and are now being supported by officers from the force as a murder investigation is launched.

A 43-year-old woman from the Stafford area was arrested by police on suspicion of murder and is now being held in police custody.

Speaking on the case, Detective Inspector Kirsty Oldfield from Staffordshire Police said enquiries are still at an early stage.

"We are working hard to understand more about what happened leading up to these two children tragically losing their lives," Oldfield said.

“We ask that people do not speculate at this stage as it is distressing for family and friends and could hinder our enquiries.

She added: “We understand that this incident may cause concern in the local community. We don’t believe there is wider threat to the public at this time; a cordon is currently in place at a home on Corporation Street."

Anyone who may have any relevant information regarding the case is being urged to get in touch as soon as possible.

Those who could be able to help police with any leads is being asked to call 101 and quote incident reference number 147 from October 12th.
