Police launch investigation after Redheugh Bridge incident in Gateshead
A major search operation is taking place to find a man seen entering the water
A major police investigation is underway following a serious incident on Redheugh Bridge in Gateshead on Friday night (10 April), after reports of a disturbance involving a group of people and a man entering the water.
Officers were called shortly before 10pm after reports of an altercation on the bridge.
It is understood that a man entered the River Tyne for reasons that have not yet been established.
Emergency services quickly attended the scene. A 48-year-old woman was arrested in connection with the events and remains in police custody while enquiries continue.
Specialist teams have been conducting extensive searches in the area.
Despite ongoing efforts, the man has not yet been located.
The case is now being led by the force’s Major Investigation Team, which is continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Detective Inspector Andy Miller said: “This is an incredibly tragic incident where for reasons yet to be established a man has sadly entered the water.
“While our investigation is very much in its early stages, we’re committed to understanding the full events of yesterday evening.”
He added: “This is an incredibly busy entry route to the city centre, and we know there was a lot of activity in the area at the time – including multiple vehicles passing.
“We’re keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed or captured the moments surrounding the incident, especially those who may have dashcam footage.

“No matter how insignificant you think your information might be, it could prove crucial to our ongoing investigation.
“Our search for the man we believe to have entered the water is very much ongoing and I would like to thank our officers and all partners from other emergency services who have taken part in search activity for their assistance.”
