Nathan Owens, 34, has been sentenced to life in prison after being found guilty of murdering his stepdaughter, 20-year-old Carla Georgescu, in Preston.
Carla, a dedicated student of Clinical Psychology, was found dead in her student accommodation on her birthday, with evidence revealing that Owens travelled from Hartlepool to commit the crime.
The murder, which occurred on 3rd November, was part of a series of events that highlighted Owens' disturbing obsession with Carla. CCTV footage initially led to suspicions that Carla had taken her own life, but further investigations uncovered the truth.
A post-mortem examination confirmed that Carla suffered significant injuries, including strangulation, at the hands of Owens. His attempts to cover the crime failed, as police uncovered messages, evidence of his sexual obsession, and an elaborate cover-up attempt using Carla's belongings.
Owens was ultimately found guilty of multiple charges, including murder, causing grievous bodily harm, and making indecent photographs of a child. His conviction followed a three-week trial at Preston Crown Court, where he was sentenced to serve at least 35 years before becoming eligible for parole.
Detective Inspector Pete Macdonald stated, "Carla had her whole life ahead of her, which was ripped away by someone she should have been able to trust. Owens has taken Carla’s life, but he has also changed her mum’s completely. He has torn apart the family he was trusted to love."
Despite the tragedy, the conviction offers some solace to Carla’s family as they move forward knowing Owens faces a long prison term.
