A man who strangled and stabbed his wife at their home in Sandwell after she tried to divorce him has been convicted of murder.

51-year-old Harminder Mattu fatally attacked 46-year-old Paramjit Kaur at their house on Swan Crescent, Oldbury.

Paramjit was in the process of leaving Mattu having filed for divorce around two months before the attack.

Mattu strangled and stabbed her (most likely after she was unconscious) at around 11pm on 30th March 2025.

He waited until 8am the next day to report that he'd killed her.

He claimed that Paramjit was drunk and was the one armed with the knife, and that he managed to get it off her before stabbing her.

A post-mortem examination shows that she died as a result of pressure on her neck and that the stab injuries most likely occurred after she was unconscious.

Detective Sergeant Paul Parham said: "It appeared Mattu was trying to punish his wife for wanting to leave him.

"It wasn't self-defence, but the selfish actions of a man who didn't want his marriage to end."

Mattu had abused Paramjit previously, slapping her, twisting her leg and grabbing her throat causing her to lose consciousness.

At the end of 2024 she moved out of their house but returned after Mattu said he was suicidal.

He is due to be sentenced on 2nd April.

In tribute, Paramjit’s family said: “We feel a huge loss to our family, my sister was a loving and active member of our family who cared for and looked out for us all."
