Documentary series about Friends star Matthew Perry set to air next month
Featuring interviews with his sister Mia Perry Bowick
Last updated 8 hours ago
For more than a decade, fans knew him as Chandler Bing on Friends. The late actor Matthew Perry played what many viewers called their 'favourite Friend'. Chandler was the character known for making the others laugh with his inadvertent agreement to accept a job in Tulsa, and going to extreme lengths to avoid Janice, by saying he's going to Yemen for work.
Now, three years after the sad passing of Matthew Perry due to an accidental overdose, a new three-part documentary on Netflix will feature interviews with those close to the actor. Combining interviews with the late actor's sister, Mia Perry Bowick, along with family archive photos, the documentary has been directed by Emmy winner Mary Robertson and produced by Maxine Productions, a part of Sony Pictures Television.
What is the Matthew Perry documentary called?
Following the naming convention of Friends episodes, the documentary is called The One about Matthew Perry.
What is the documentary about?
A synopsis for the documentary reads: 'Anchored by never-before-heard testimonies from Perry’s sister Mia Perry Bowick and his lifelong best friends, the three-part series, which features unreleased photos and videos from the Perry family’s private archive, traces his journey from rising comedic star to the man the world still loves as their favourite Friend. Firsthand memories from his creative collaborators and friends who adored and supported him are woven with candid new details on his private struggles.'

What does Matthew Perry's sister say about the documentary?
Mia Perry Bowick, Matthew's sister is a licensed psychotherapist, writer, and speaker and appears in the documentary. Speaking about the new series, she said: "It’s taken time for me to feel ready to share these memories and what it was like to love Matthew through all the complexity of his life — to see him as a whole person, not just as Chandler, and not just as someone who struggled with addiction.
"As his sister, he shaped who I am today, the person I strive to be, and the work to which I’ve devoted my life. Matthew had a beautiful heart and a generous spirit, and even in his darkest moments, he could still make you laugh and feel loved. I hope this series gives everyone who loved him, whether personally or from afar, a deeper appreciation for who he truly was, and the legacy he leaves behind."
How many episodes are there?
There are three episodes, the length of the episodes has not yet been revealed.
When will it be released?
It will be released on Tuesday 27th October 2026.
Who directed the series?
The series has been directed by Emmy winner Mary Robertson, speaking about the documentary she said: "Matthew Perry was one of the comedic geniuses of our time. Through his many films, TV, and stage performances, and his unforgettable portrayal of Chandler Bing, he made millions of us laugh, connect, and feel a little less alone. He also gave us so much more by bravely speaking about addiction. Yet the public only knew part of his story. That’s why we set out to make this series: to let the people who knew and loved Matthew reveal the person behind the public figure."
