Driver arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving

A single-vehicle crash on the M23 has resulted in the death of a 23-year-old woman from London.

The collision occurred just before 5am this morning, Thursday, between junctions nine and 10 on the northbound carriageway.

A car veered off the main road, resulting in the fatality at the scene, while another passenger, a 23-year-old man from London, is being treated for serious injuries in hospital.

The driver, a 21-year-old man from London, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

He is currently in custody as the investigation continues.

Inspector Matt Wightwick described the crash as a tragic incident, confirming the ongoing investigation into its full circumstances.

Inspector Wightwick said, “The victims and their families are at the forefront of our minds during what must be an unbelievably difficult time.”

The northbound carriageway remains closed for the investigation and vehicle recovery, with police acknowledging the impact on travellers, particularly those heading to the airport.

Police are urging witnesses, especially those with dashcam footage, to come forward.
