Two people have been injured after a car ploughed into a JD Gyms building in Bury town centre.

Emergency services were called to George Street at around 16:45BST on Tuesday (14 April), with a huge cordon put in place.

Drivers were asked to avoid George Street and Rochdale Street while a rescue operation got underway.

Videos posted on social media from inside the gym show rubble covering the floor, and people stood around inside.

Police have since confirmed a man in his 60s was hit by the car whilst inside the gym, while a female driver in her 40s was arrested and taken to hospital.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “At around 5pm on Tuesday 14 April, fire crews were called to reports of a road traffic collision on George Street, Bury.

“Two fire engines from Bury and Whitefield stations, as well as the technical rescue unit from Ashton, were quickly mobilised to the incident, which involved a car colliding with a commercial building.

“Firefighters extricated a woman from the car, while another man inside the building was also injured in the collision. They were treated at the scene by paramedics and then taken to hospital by North West Ambulance Service.

“Fire crews remain in attendance, working with Greater Manchester Police and the local council’s building inspection team to make the area safe.”

In a statement posted on social media, JD Gyms said: "Earlier today an incident occurred at JD Gyms involving a vehicle making contact with the exterior of the building, which resulted in damge to part of the gym.

"As a precaution and in the interest of everyone's safety, the gym will remain closed until further notice.

"Our team are on it straight away and building surveyors are due to attend in the morning. We will know more following their visit and will update here."
