Train collides with van at level crossing near Sittingbourne

A man has died after a train collided with a van at a level crossing in a village in Kent.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing a fire following a collision in Teynham near Sittingbourne earlier this afternoon (Sunday 13th July 2025).

Reports suggest a high-speed train heading towards London was involved in the collision.

It's not known if anyone has been injured.

Southeastern says bus replacement services are in place for affected passengers.

A British Transport Police spokesperson confirmed a man had died at the scene and an investigation into what happened is ongoing.

A Kent Police spokesperson said:

"Kent Police was called at 12.43pm on Sunday 13 July 2025 to a report of a collision involving a train and a van at a level crossing in Lower Road, Teynham.

"Patrols are currently at the scene where they are assisting officers from the British Transport Police.

"South East Coast Ambulance Service and Kent Fire and Rescue Service also attended."

A South East Coast Ambulance Service spokesperson said:

"SECAmb was called shortly after 12.45pm today (13 July) to the train line at Tonge following reports of a train striking a van.

"Ambulance crews including our Hazardous Area Response Team attended alongside emergency service colleagues and we were joined at the scene by Air Ambulance Charity Kent, Surrey, Sussex.

"One person was sadly pronounced dead at the scene."
