A 19-year-old man has died after getting into difficulty whilst swimming in open water in Nottinghamshire.

He was rescued from Balderton Lake in New Balderton on Thursday afternoon.

Police say the teenager was visiting with friends when the incident happened.

East Midlands Ambulance Service treated him at the scene, and he was taken to hospital.

Unfortunately, he did not survive.

His family has been informed.

No suspicious circumstances are believed to be involved, and the case is being reviewed by the coroner.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service and Nottinghamshire Police are reminding people of the dangers associated with open waters, especially during hot weather.

Group Manager Charlotte Weatherall-Smith from Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service highlighted the risks:

"Even on warm and sunny days, water temperatures can be much colder than they appear, leading to cold water shock which can be sudden and severe."

In the event of spotting someone in difficulty, it's advised to call 999 and provide the fire service with an accurate location using what3words or nearby landmarks.

Emergency services are also stressing the importance of not attempting a rescue, as this can put more lives in danger.

15 people have now lost their lives in open water in the UK during the recent hot weather.
