A former teacher from Blackpool will spend the rest of his life in prison for the murder and abuse of his adopted 13 month old baby boy.

Jamie Varley, 37, was found guilty of killing Preston Davey, alongside multiple charges including sexual abuse and creating indecent images of the child.

His partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, 32, was convicted of child cruelty and sexual assault, who today has been sentenced to a minimum of 25 years.

The tragic case unfolded in 2023 after Preston, taken into foster care shortly after birth, was adopted by Varley and McGowan-Fazakerley.

Initially thriving in foster care, Preston's life took a devastating turn after his adoption in April. In less than four months, he was repeatedly abused and ultimately suffered fatal injuries at the hands of those meant to care for him.

The trial at Preston Crown Court revealed harrowing details, including frequent trips to Blackpool Victoria Hospital. Varley and McGowan-Fazakerley often offered explanations for Preston’s injuries, which included bruising and a fractured arm, prompting hospital staff and social services to check for signs of maltreatment.

On July 27th 2023, Preston was rushed to the hospital once more, and despite efforts to save his life, he was pronounced dead.

Varley claimed that Preston had drowned, but a post-mortem revealed the cause of death was acute upper airway obstruction and identified over 40 injuries consistent with abuse, ruling out drowning.

This week, on what would have been Preston's fourth birthday, dozens gathered to remember the baby boy with a candle lit vigil and a minutes silence.

Detective Chief Inspector Andy Fallows who led the investigation described the case as a betrayal, criticising Varley's manipulative behaviour throughout the ordeal.

The case has highlighted failures in safeguarding Preston, prompting a forthcoming review by Oldham Council to address missed opportunities.
