Emergency services are currently investigating the unexplained deaths of two men at adjoining properties in Gatesgarth Close, Scarborough.

The first incident occurred on Wednesday 21 May, when a 49-year-old man was found deceased at his home. On Monday 26 May, police were called to a second sudden death, this time involving a 69-year-old man in the neighbouring property.

Due to the unusual circumstances and proximity of the deaths, both incidents are being treated as unexplained. A full forensic examination of the scene is underway, including tests for potential environmental factors that may have contributed.

As a precaution, the two affected properties have been evacuated, and nearby residents have been provided with alternative accommodation. A police cordon and scene guard remain in place, and members of the public may see emergency personnel in protective clothing and using specialist equipment — a standard measure until further information is known.

Authorities stress that there is currently no identified risk to the wider community, and the evacuated residents will remain in temporary accommodation while investigations continue.

North Yorkshire Police stated:

“Our thoughts remain with the men’s families who are being supported by specially trained officers at this sad time.

We would also like to thank local residents for their patience and understanding while this work is carried out.”
