Six fire engines were called to a large fire within an electrical substation in Exeter, following reports at around 7am this morning.

There has also been a command support unit from Honiton in attendance to the scene, where crews are attempting best efforts to extinguish the fire and protect surrounding properties.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue services have confirmed that nearby properties have been evacuated, and 400 homes were believed to be without power, just after 8am.

The incident has since been scaled back, but crews will stay at the scene to monitor hotspots, as residents will be able to return to their home.

Riverside Leisure Centre has been used as a respite centre for those evacuated out of homes.

Fire and rescue services still urge that residents keep windows and doors closed, and also warn of further disruption to electricity supply.
