Prominent business and community leader Carol Shanahan OBE has been named as the new Chancellor of Keele University.

She takes over the role from Lord Timpson OBE, who stepped down to serve as Prisons Minister in the UK Government.

Shanahan becomes the sixth person to hold the honorary position, following in the footsteps of previous Chancellors, including the university's first female Chancellor, HRH The Princess Margaret.

"I'm honoured beyond words," Shanahan said upon her appointment, expressing excitement for her new responsibilities.

The position involves presiding over graduation ceremonies and other ceremonial duties for the university.

Keele University's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kevin Shakesheff, welcomed Shanahan’s appointment, citing her career as a beacon of values aligned with the university’s mission, such as access to education, social justice, and civic responsibility.

Shanahan brings a wealth of experience to the role, having co-founded Synectics Solutions, a technology company focused on data analytics and financial crime prevention.

Her leadership has been recognised internationally, earning a Queen’s Award for enterprise.

In addition to her business accomplishments, she has been a pivotal figure in sporting and civic leadership as the chair of Port Vale Football Club since 2019, emphasising community engagement in her approach.

Shanahan also founded the Hubb Foundation, a charity dedicated to supporting children and families during school holidays in Stoke-on-Trent.

Under her guidance, the organisation reached a significant milestone in 2024, providing its one millionth free meal.

Her impact during the Covid-19 pandemic was notable, transforming Port Vale FC into a community hub and coordinating efforts to deliver 350,000 meals across Stoke-on-Trent.

Shanahan was honoured with an OBE in 2020 for her services to the community and was further recognised with the Freedom of Stoke-on-Trent in 2025 for her contributions.

Shanahan's local and regional efforts are expected to enrich Keele University’s vision, helping address major societal challenges.

Welcoming her appointment, Professor Shakesheff said: "Her blend of entrepreneurial success, leadership experience and deep regional commitment make her a respected ambassador for the university."

Shanahan herself expressed eagerness to engage with students and advance the university’s ethos, stating that universities like Keele have a crucial role in driving meaningful social change.
