The Green Party have claimed victory in the Gorton and Denton by-election, marking the first time the party has ever installed an MP at Westminster in the middle of a Parliament.

Hannah Spencer will now head to Parliament with a majority of 4,402 - a vote share of over 40%.

Labour were pushed down to third place behind Reform, with their vote 25% lower than at the last general election and has called the result "deeply disappointing", describing the politics of the Green Party and Reform as "angry and easy answers."

Why the vote was called

Voters went to the polls on 26th February 2026 after the seat became vacant following the resignation of former Labour MP Andrew Gwynne.

He resigned in late January 2026 citing health reasons.

Gwynne had represented the area and its predecessor constituencies since 2005.

Who is Hannah Spencer

Hannah Spencer is a local politician who previously served as a Green Party councillor in Trafford.

She was selected by the Green Party to contest the seat following Gwynne’s resignation.

During the campaign, she focused on cost-of-living pressures, public services, environmental issues and Palestine.

Speaking after the result she said "One thing everyone seems to have underestimated, especially over the last few weeks, is how similar we all actually are.

"We have common ground, we get along, we stand up for each other, and the divisions we’re starting to see can be healed. And I believe that it is through offering a chance to do things differently and do things better.

In a reference to her job as a plumber and plasterer she said:

"Now to my customers — I’m sorry, I think I might have work in Parliament when I get there. I will make space for everyone doing a job nine to five. We will finally get a seat at the table.

"And Lala, the little girl who I had the pleasure of meeting this week — I promise you I will try to improve the world you are growing up in.

"I told you that I am not perfect, but I will always try my best. I always try and do the right thing.

"Change is definitely happening and I invite you to be part of it. Across the country more and more of us are choosing hope over hating each other. We can do that together.

"A hopeful campaign backed by thousands of volunteers and activists — we defeated the parties backed by billionaire owners.

"We showed we don’t have to be set against each other at all, and we did this with the people who live here, side by side, shoulder to shoulder, as we have always done in this constituency and in the whole of Manchester."

A closely watched contest

The by-election had been seen as a significant test for several parties.

Labour selected Angeliki Stogia as its candidate, while Reform UK put forward Matt Goodwin.

The result is expected to pile further pressure on the Prime Minister, who's already been rocked by various scandals in recent months.

Spencer will now take her seat in the House of Commons as the MP for Gorton and Denton.
