Tributes are being paid this morning to a Wiltshire D-Day veteran, who has reportedly died.

It's understood Cecil Newton peacefully died in his sleep overnight (May 1st).

The man, who was from Aldbourne in Wiltshire, served in the 4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards, and was one of the first people to land on Gold Beach, before rolling into Western Germany, back in June 1944.

He served for more than three years in WWII.

Following the war, he later went on to qualify as a quantity surveyor and moved to Swindon.

On social media, friend and historian Gary Wright said: "For those of you who met my dear old friend Trooper Cecil Newton I received the news last night that he died yesterday at 17:00 Thursday 1 May 2025.

"He was 101 and one of our last D-Day veterans. He arrived on Gold Beach in an amphibious tank with 4/7 Royal Dragoon Guards.

"RIP."
