An 89-year-old man has been given a suspended jail term after he ran a red light and injuring two six-year-old children in Swindon.

Harold Small, of Corsham Road, Penhill, was sentenced at Swindon Crown Court for careless driving following his guilty plea last month.

The incident occurred on 11th December 2023 when the children were crossing Beechcroft Road at a traffic light-controlled pedestrian crossing. Small ran a red light, causing serious injuries to the children.

Alongside a sentence of 22 weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months, Small was disqualified from driving for 12 months.

One of the victims sustained a fractured arm, while the other suffered cuts and bruises.

The mothers of the two children spoke out about the impact the incident has had on their families.

"This incident has changed our lives," one mother said. "I wouldn’t wish the effects it has had on us on my worst enemy."

"The boys stepped into the road and my whole life changed," said the mother of the other child.

Detective Constable Alex Way from Wiltshire Police's Serious Collision Investigation Team commented on the case.

"I know this incident has had a lasting effect on all those involved, both physically and emotionally," DC Way said.

"I am pleased that today has brought some justice for the families and will hopefully prevent further victims. This case is a stark reminder to all drivers to pay closer attention to their driving, especially around schools where young children are using the roads and pathways."
