A statue that was stolen from its plinth in East London will be replaced, according to the grandson of the man whose statue was stolen.

The statue honoured the UK's youngest world champion Teddy Baldock, who won the World Bantamweight championship in 1927, aged just 19.

In February, the statue was stolen from its plinth, with CCTV showing a gang of thieves taking down the statue, leaving only the shoes.

Currently no arrests have been made into the statue's theft.

Now, two months after the theft, Teddy's grandson Martin Sax has confirmed to us the statue will be replaced.

The statue was covered by insurance, meaning the cost of a new statue is entirely covered without the need for community fundraising. The original statue was put in place 12 years ago after over £100,000 was raised.

Martin told us 'I wanted to wait to see if the insurance paid out before putting it out to the public, especially in these current days where money is pretty tight.

Now we need to start the process of getting the statue remoulded and recast.

Martin told us what the process could look like.

'I need to drop off the resin head i've got from the original statue, and also a 15 inch miniature, which they will do a 3d scan of. Then they will get artists to improve the detail from the 3d print and prepare the moulds for recasting.

The original designer of the statue Carl Payne has since passed away since it was originally unveiled. Martin said he is happy a way has been found to honour Carl, and also include the original shoes left behind after the theft.

" We can recycle the boots that were left on the plinth, so that will be an original part of the statue, and then with the original resin head I have, that's also carl's original work so that's important to his family".
