A coastguard crew in Sussex has said it's believed a major search and rescue operation may have been caused by seals.

Teams were sent to reports of a person in the water off Lifeboat way in Selsey at 11.22am on Tuesday (11th February).

"Selsey Inshore Lifeboat, Littlehampton Coastguard Rescue Team and Coastguard Helicopter "Rescue 187" and "Rescue 175" were all tasked to assist," the coastguard said on Facebook.

Nothing was found after all the searches were completed, so the operation was stood down.

The coastguard added: "Several seals were spotted in the area while searching and we believe that this may have been what was spotted.

"However, the call was made with good intent and the first informant did the right thing by calling 999 and asking for the Coastguard."
