Europe’s largest drone testing facility launched in Swindon
The new centre aims to keep Britain’s Armed Forces at the forefront of technological advancements
Europe’s largest drone testing facility has opened in Swindon, marking a significant advancement for Britain's Armed Forces in utilising cutting-edge technology.
The new DroneTEX facility, home to the Uncrewed Systems Centre (USC), aims to keep the UK at the leading edge of innovation, rapidly developing and fielding new capabilities in weeks, rather than years.
Defence Secretary Dan Jarvis MP inaugurated the centre today, highlighting its role in adapting to the fast-evolving nature of modern conflicts.
Drone technology has become crucial in warfare, as evidenced by its extensive use in the Iran and Ukraine conflicts, where drones play a key role in targeting high-value assets.
The Swindon facility is seen as a critical hub for collaboration with defence industry leaders, allies, and partners.
Spread over 545,000 sq ft, it will support the development and testing of the latest drone technologies and foster partnerships within the industry.
Supporting Economic Growth
Alongside enhancing military capabilities, the centre is set to bolster the UK economy by supporting small British enterprises, unlocking export potential, and generating new jobs.
British SMEs will benefit from collaboration opportunities within the DroneTEX facility, contributing to the proliferation of high-skilled positions.
Harnessing AI and Data Integration
The centre will also focus on the integration of AI and data analytics, leveraging technology to redefine modern warfare.
Task Force RAID (Rapid AI Delivery) is one of the initiatives contributing to this effort, further emphasised by recent announcements from the Prime Minister and Chief of the Defence Staff.
Investment in Autonomous Systems
This strategic move aligns with the Strategic Defence Review, which sees an increase in autonomy investment, totaling £4 billion in autonomous systems during this parliament.
The Ministry of Defence has dedicated more than £450 million towards uncrewed systems to date, with over £300 million invested in research and development since July 2024.
In the past year alone, UK Defence Innovation has allocated over £142 million for the rapid scale-up of drone production and anti-drone weaponry.
At the opening of the USC, Defence Secretary Dan Jarvis MP said: "The character of warfare is changing, and it is changing fast. From Ukraine to the Middle East, we are seeing right now how uncrewed systems are rapidly evolving and reshaping conflicts – on land, in the air and at sea
"Our new DroneTEX facility at the heart of our Uncrewed Systems Centre is Europe’s largest drone test and development facility, and will help us ensure the UK embraces technologies that are redefining warfare.
"Where once new technology could take years from inception to reaching our Armed Forces, we will now be able to develop and field new tech in a matter of weeks - because in this new era, those who innovate fastest will win."
