About Rouhangeze
Rouhangeze ( RŪḤ) is a nomadic force of nature. A Mauritian-born child prodigy turned global cultural ambassador who moves fluidly across the international creative landscape. Her sound is an intoxicating fusion, weaving the rhythmic tapestry of the Indian Ocean into the sophisticated pulse of modern jazz and soul with fearless improvisation and a raw, visceral emotional range. A vocalist, producer, and storyteller, RŪḤ’s world-class caliber is cemented by an elite list of collaborators, including Omar Hakim, Rachel Z, Linley Marthe, Antonio Forcione, Mark Mondesir, Bernard Maseli, Tomasz Bura, and Telemakus. Whether she is performing on the global stage or broadcasting to the Jazz FM audience, she remains a singular, boundary-crossing voice bridging ancestral heritage with the cutting edge of international sound.
What introduced you to jazz music?
Good fortune at the age of 9. My father's cousins who lived in France gifted us with the 1990s ECM record ‘Took Up The Runes’ by Jan Garbarek.
Your favourite melody to hum in the morning?
Most days, they are my own. They just emerge. My mood influences the sound and melody, but typically I hum in a therapeutic way to give myself a sonic cuddle.
What is the album that expanded your idea of jazz?
A few over the past 20 years. The 1958 ‘Ascenseur pour l'échafaud’ by Miles Davis stands out. The music of The Joe Zawinul Syndicate, Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny...
I often find my way back to Jan Garbarek's ‘I Took Up The Runes’ - one that reminds me that music is the ladder to the soul. Every time I hear it, I feel elevated and inspired.
What is your most memorable jazz gig?
Rachelle Ferrell at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club
