Grammy nominations for Lalah Hathaway and Robert Glasper again
Lalah Hathaway, Robert Glasper, Dianne Reeves, Chick Corea and veteran saxophonist Archie Shepp are amongst nominees for the 2015 Grammy Awards
Nominations for the 57th Grammy Awards have been announced. The Awards ceremony will take place on February 8th 2015.
Last yearās award winning Lalah Hathaway receives a nomination again this year, this time for her version of Stevie Wonderās āJesus Children Of America' on Robert Glasper Experimentās āBlack Radio 2ā album. The nomination is for āBest Traditional R&B Performanceā. Lalah won last year for her remake of Brenda Russell's 'Somethin'Ā on Snarky Puppy's 'Family Dinner Vol. 1' album.
Robert Glasper is nominated for āBest R&B Album' for āBlack Radio 2ā on a good showing for the iconic Blue Note Records on its 75th anniversary.Ā
āBest Jazz Instrumental Albumā included three more from Blue Note. Drummer Brian Blade & The Fellowship Band for āLandmarksā andĀ vibes player Bobby Hutcheson on his return to the label for āEnjoy The Viewā which featured David Sanborn, Joey De Francesco and Billy Hart. Blue Note Records pianist Jason Moranās contemporary re-working of Fat Wallerās music āAll Riseā was also in this categoryĀ togetherĀ with Chick Coreaās three CD live album āTrilogyā.
Chick wasĀ in the nominations for āBest Improvised Jazz Soloā also along with pianists Brad Mehldau and Fred Hersch andĀ saxophonist Joe Lovano.
American pianist Billy Childsā atmospheric album āMap To The Treasure: Re-imagining Laura Nyroā, that has featured on Jazz FM, is among the āBest Jazz Vocal Albumā nominees. The album includes singer Dianne Reeves who was also nominated for her superb āBeautiful Lifeā album. RenĆ© Marieās tribute to Eartha Kitt āI Wanna Be Evilā and Gretchen Parlatoās āLive In NYCā could also win this category.
Veteran saxophonist Archie Sheep received a nomination for 'Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album' his live album with his new Attica Blues Orchestra called āLive: I Hear The Soundā. The album is a re-interpretation of his historic political jazz statement āAttica Bluesā from 1972 and Sheppās performance was one of the gala closing concerts fro the 2013 EFG London Jazz Festival.
āBest Latin Jazz Albumā nominations include āThe Latin Side Of Joe Hendersonā from trombonist Conrad Herwig, percussionistĀ Pedrito Martinez Groupās superb self titled CD for indie label Motema Music, who also had a strong showing, and pianist Arturo OāFarrillās large ensemble with āThe Offense Of The Drumā.
Sergio Mendes made itĀ into the nominations for his multi collaborative album āMagicā as āBest World Music Albumā as did Anoushka Shankar, sister of Norah Jones, for āTraces Of Youā.
Cuban pianist Alfredo Rodriguez, mentored and championed by Quincy Jones, was nominated for āBest Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappellaā for his audacious take on the latin standard āGuantanameraā. His album āThe Invasion Paradeā has been extensively played on Chris Philipsā programme āThe Blueprintā on Jazz FM.
Other nominations of note see āBest Contemporary Instrumental Albumā places go to saxophonist Gerald Albright, bassist Nathan East and also the trio of Jeff Lorber, Chuck Loeb and Everette Harp for their album āJazz, Funk, Soulā. Jazz FM favourite Ledisi was nominated for āBest R&B Performanceā.
