North Hykeham relief road to deliver lasting social value for local communities
The North Hykeham Relief Road is set to deliver far more than vital transport improvements – it is being designed to create lasting social value for communities near the works and across Lincolnshire.
Cllr David East, executive member for highways, said:
“We place social value at the heart of our big road projects, ensuring that investment in major infrastructure brings meaningful and long-term benefits to local people. And this procurement route was specifically chosen because it places social value at the heart of scheme delivery, ensuring a lasting legacy for our communities.
“By setting clear goals and working with partners who have a proven track record in this area, we can ensure residents benefit as much as possible from our investment in infrastructure.”
Building a Lasting Legacy
Balfour Beatty, the project’s principal contractor, is committed to delivering positive change through its sustainability strategy, ‘Building New Futures’. This initiative focuses on leaving a lasting legacy in the communities the company serves.
Michelle Mann, social impact manager for Balfour Beatty, said:
“As we deliver the North Hykeham Relief Road, we’re keen to work closely with local communities to understand where we can make the biggest positive difference.
“Whether that’s supporting a community project, arranging a school visit or engaging with local organisations, we’d encourage people and organisations to get in touch and help us shape a lasting legacy for the area.”
Plans for Communities Near the New Relief Road
As part of the North Hykeham Relief Road project, a range of activities are planned to bring social value to life, including:
School visits and workshops – Hands-on activities such as bridge‑building challenges and career talks designed to spark curiosity and introduce students to the world of construction.
Career days in education – Collaboration with colleges, universities and learning centres to open doors to careers in engineering, infrastructure and sustainability.
Work experience and apprenticeships – Real-world experience and mentoring to help young people explore roles in construction, engineering, administration and beyond.
Community projects – Volunteering, in-kind support and material donations to local initiatives, with project teams actively supporting causes that matter to nearby communities.
STEM engagement – Promoting Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics education to empower the next generation of innovators and problem-solvers.
