Estranged husband of Nicola Sturgeon jailed for more than 5 years
He took more £400,000 from the SNP while he was chief exec.
The estranged husband of former First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, has been jailed for 5 years and 3 months for embezzling over £400,000 of SNP money.
Peter Murrell admitted taking £400,310.65 from the party between August 2010 and October 2022 while he was the chief executive.
What exactly was the cash spent on?
He used the cash to buy a number of luxury items including a motorhome which was left at the side of his mother's house in Dunfermline.
He bought a number of luxury items and kept them inside the motorhome as well as a number of guides for touring the country.
The 61-year-old bought hair dryers, watches and video games over the twelve year period.
He was first arrested in April 2023 as part of Police Scotland’s Operation Branchform investigation into SNP finances, before being charged the following year.
Assistant Chief Constable Stuart Houston described the case as “lengthy and extremely complex”, saying Murrell had shown “utter contempt” for the public trust placed in him.
He said investigators spent more than four years carrying out enquiries across Europe, alleging Murrell used false receipts and accounting methods to hide his offending while funding “the lavish lifestyle he craved but could not afford”.
