A man who stabbed his ex-partner 22 times in front of her children in York has been jailed for over 22 years for attempted murder.

35-year-old Jake Joe Bamber, of no fixed address, brutally attacked the woman at her home on Lindley Road in January.

He broke into her address armed with knives, hid in a cupboard and jumped out, stabbing her in front of her two young children.

Bamber attacked her so brutally that the knives broke.

He then went into her kitchen to get more knives and continued stabbing her before he ran away from the scene.

The woman told her two children to call for help, both on the phone and out the window.

A neighbour climbed through the window, moving the children to safety, and started first aid despite not knowing if Bamber was still there.

Emergency services arrived minutes after the 999 call was made, to find the woman with significant blood loss.

She was taken to hospital in a life-threatening condition.

Bamber was later found that evening on Whitley Close in York with stab wounds. Police believe these were self-inflicted.

He was arrested two days later after being discharged from hospital.

Bamber pleaded guilty to attempted murder, possession of a knife in a public place, controlling and coercive behaviour, and stalking.

The court heard the attack followed a period of abusive behaviour towards the victim.

He's been jailed for 22 years and four months with an extended licence period of five years.

Detective Chief Inspector Carol Kirk, the senior investigating officer, said: "This was a truly horrific and senseless act of violence on a young woman in her own home.

"The extreme level of brutality Bamber inflicted on the victim was beyond belief, and it was all because she had the courage to end the cycle of domestic abuse that he had subjected her to over an extended period of time.

"Terrifyingly, Bamber was hiding in wait for the victim to return home before leaping out at her with a knife. This was the place where she should have felt safe and secure, but his terrible actions shattered that feeling forever.

"Bamber then fled the scene leaving his victim fighting for her life."
