Following the huge success The Night Agent first season, it’s no surprise that Netflix bosses were quick to keep the show going. After the second instalment landed in January 2025, the streaming giant confirmed that season three was already in production.

The third season finally arrived in February, continuing the story of FBI agent Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso) and proving the political thriller remains a major hit with viewers. Now, Netflix has revealed even more good news for fans - confirming that The Night Agent will return for a fourth season.

As part of their season four announcement, Netflix shared a video titled Tourists Become Night Agents alongside the caption: 'Do you have what it takes to be a Night Agent? On a snowy afternoon in New York City, a mysterious phone in Times Square rings. When an unsuspecting tourist answers the call, they’re thrust into a dangerous high-stakes mission to find a code and crack the case'.

After a high-stakes global mission in season three of The Night Agent, Agent Peter Sutherland is gearing up for another thrilling assignment. Having travelled the world chasing stolen financial intelligence and unravelling complex conspiracies, the show will soon be back with a brand-new mission.

"It’s been a wild ride filming The Night Agent in five countries across three continents … and we’re so thrilled that the adventures of Peter Sutherland will continue into Season 4", says series creator, executive producer, and showrunner Shawn Ryan.

"Our writers, our cast, and our crew stand ready to answer the call to bring our incredible fans even more twists, turns, and thrills."

Where does the series pick up?

The latest season ends with Peter telling his boss, Agent Aiden Mosley (Albert Jones), that he’s finally decided to take a much-needed break from work. The FBI deputy director seems pleased but also dangles new possibilities for the agent once he’s ready to return.

Season three ended with Peter telling his superior, Agent Aiden Mosley (Albert Jones), that he plans to step back for a much-needed break. While Mosley respects his decision, he subtly suggests that exciting new assignments await his return.

"I’ve been thinking about the request you made earlier for a partner. I think I have a candidate in mind," Mosley tells Peter. As Shawn previously told Tudum, that tease is "meant to be a launching pad for Season 4".

When is season four releasing?

While Netflix are yet to announce a release date, production in Los Angeles was confirmed on 6th March 2026.

What is the plot?

Season one

Whilst the first series of the show was based on Matthew Quirk's novel of the same name, there was never a second book, meaning future seasons are entirely an original story.

Writer Shawn Ryan previously expressed his idea on the storylines.

Speaking to TV Line in April 2023, he said: "So it's something that with the pickup we're now working on.

"I would say that Sutherland's first mission as a Night Agent will be the starting-off point, to sort of see what he was being sent off to do. But we have some surprises. I don't want to say too much, because until you're actually filming it, the stories can always change."

Season two

The location changed for season two, with Shawn adding: "Season 2 does not take place in the D.C. area, which is where Season 1 took place. So we'll be in a different part of the world exploring different characters than we had in Season 1. And we're determining who from Season 1 might appear in Season 2.

"But essentially we're going to be telling a whole brand new story, which is exciting and scary. And with the high bar that Season 1 set for audience expectations, we feel that pressure too. And so we're just going to do our best to tell a story that feels within The Night Agent universe, but that feels new, fresh, and exciting."

Season three

The official Netflix synopsis reads: 'Coming off the explosive events of Season Two, Night Agent Peter Sutherland is called in to track down a young Treasury Agent who fled to Istanbul with sensitive government intel after killing his boss. This kicks off a sequence of events where Peter investigates a dark money network while avoiding its paid assassins, while putting him on a collision course with a relentless journalist. Working together, they uncover buried secrets and old grudges that threaten to bring the government to its knees -- and get them both killed in the process.'

Speaking about the upcoming season, showrunner Shawn Ryan told Tudum: "We’re so excited to bring new thrills, new worlds, new stunts, new characters, and new adventures to our fans in Season 3. Thanks so much for devouring Season 2, and we look forward to bringing you a bigger and even better Season 3."
