Geothermal electricity and zero-carbon lithium production launch in Cornwall
It's been described as a double first for the UK with the production of geothermal electricity and zero-carbon lithium on a commercial scale
Geothermal Energy Lithium (GEL) has launched a groundbreaking renewable energy initiative in Cornwall with the start of geothermal electricity production at its United Downs power station.
From today, GEL is generating geothermal electricity 24/7, marking a historic moment for the UK's energy mix.
The power station will deliver 3 MW of power via a deal with Octopus Energy, enough to supply 10,000 homes.
Greg Jackson, Founder of Octopus Energy, explained the significance of the project: “Bills are still too high, and the answer is more homegrown, renewable energy. For the first time, we’re bringing deep geothermal power to British homes - a clean, constant energy source right beneath our feet.”
GEL is also set to produce up to 100 tonnes of zero-carbon lithium carbonate annually starting February 2026, aiming to be one of Europe's largest producers.
The geothermal fluid used in the United Downs power plant comes from the deepest well drilled on UK soil, providing high concentrations of lithium carbonate.
Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves, emphasized the project's potential, stating: “This pioneering project is a huge opportunity for Cornwall to unlock investment, drive economic growth, support jobs, and establish the region as a vital player in Britain’s energy security.”
Dr Ryan Law, CEO of GEL, added: “We are proud to be at the forefront of this landmark step for the UK, generating electricity and lithium by harnessing the resources beneath our feet.”
Minister of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, Dr Alan Whitehead, commented on the broader implications for UK industry: “With zero-carbon lithium now being produced here in the UK, British businesses are leading the way in securing the materials needed to power the next generation of electric cars.”
The initiative promises three main benefits for the UK: a new source of home-grown renewable power, domestic lithium supply providing critical mineral security, and increased energy pricing stability.
Jason Cheng, CEO of Kerogen-CX, emphasized the investment strategy: “United Downs is a major milestone for UK geothermal and a strong validation of our investment strategy. We believe the sector is at an inflection point and are committed to scaling it across the UK and Europe.”
Luca Pozzoni, Deputy CEO of Exergy International, expressed his hopes for the future: “We are honoured to have been selected for this pioneering project, which contributes to decarbonisation while bringing added value to the region.”
As GEL continues to develop more geothermal sites, its expansion could further influence the UK's renewable energy landscape.
