The railway line between Bedford and London St Pancras will be closed until 28th June following a train crash, as a complex recovery operation is launched.

Ellie Burrows, Network Rail Eastern regional managing director, confirmed that teams are working diligently to remove the train and carriages from the line and complete essential repairs to the tracks.

Impact on services

The closure affects Greater Thameslink Railway services north of Luton and East Midlands services south of Bedford. Passengers are advised to seek alternative routes during this period as efforts to restore operations continue.

Burrows described the recovery task as “complex and challenging,” assuring the public that teams will be working tirelessly to reopen the line and resume services between Bedford and London.

Ongoing investigation

While investigations into the crash are in their early stages, preliminary indications suggest the incident was tragic but isolated.

Network Rail’s priority remains the safe reopening of the railway and the resumption of services, focusing on ensuring the infrastructure is promptly restored to normal operations.

As rail industry colleagues collaborate at pace, customers are encouraged to stay updated with developments and plan accordingly to minimise disruption during the closure period.
