Man pleads guilty to keeping dead mother in freezer at Porthcawl home

A 60 year old man has pleaded guilty at Cardiff Crown Court to keeping his mother’s body in a freezer at their home in Porthcawl.

Christopher Phillips was accused of keeping the body of his late mother Sylvia, who was 89, in the freezer after her death was discovered by South Wales Police in February.

He was charged with preventing a decent and lawful burial, as well as fraud by false representation, after being accused of using his mother’s bank account following her death.

Officers found the pensioner at the house on Poplar Crescent after receiving reports about concerns for her welfare.

A spokesperson for South Wales Police said at the time: "South Wales Police attended an address on Poplar Crescent, Porthcawl at 1.45pm on Tuesday, February seventeenth, after a call concerning the welfare of a woman. A woman in her 80s from Porthcawl was found dead within the property."

Phillips is due back in court for sentencing in June.
