Darren Wood is poised to make history this weekend as he becomes the first person to complete 1,000 parkruns after 22 years of participation in the global event.

The ambitious runner has amassed an impressive 5,000km at parkruns, illustrating a remarkable dedication to the event's community spirit over the years.

Reflecting on his journey, Wood shared, "I wasn’t at the first ever parkrun (or Bushy Park Time Trial as it was then known), but I was at the second event. Now, 22 years later, I’m about to do my 1,000th parkrun."

Achieving this milestone wasn't without its challenges.

Wood recalled participating in a memorable event at Frimley Lodge after undergoing foot surgery.

He said, “I was struggling and everything was hurting. I didn’t think I was going to manage the second lap,” but, with encouragement from friends, he completed the course, an experience he describes as 'emotional.'

Having run in 120 different locations, Wood's journey has been marked by perseverance and camaraderie.

Through sharing his story, Wood hopes to inspire others to join parkrun, saying, "If sharing my story encourages even one person to come to their first parkrun – whether to run, jog, walk, or volunteer – that would make me incredibly happy."
