Man from Eastbourne charged with terrorism offences

A man from Eastbourne has been charged in connection with an investigation into Extreme Right Wing Terrorism in Sussex.

Thomas Smith, 33, of Blakes Way, is accused of seven counts of encouragement of terrorism, contrary to section 1 of the Terrorism Act 2006.

Smith was arrested by officers from Counter Terrorism Policing South East along with three other people on 4 December - a 27-year-old woman from Hailsham, and two other men from Eastbourne; aged 36 and 41, as part of a planned operation, supported by officers from Sussex Police.

Today (10 December), the 36-year-old man was released with no further action.

The 41-year-old man and the 27-year-old woman were also released with no further action.

Smith was remanded in custody to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court tomorrow (11 December).
