Armed police were deployed to a town centre street in Lincolnshire, after reports of up to 20 people involved in a disturbance which saw a man chased from a vehicle into a property.
Lincolnshire Police said it was investigating unconfirmed rumours that a firearm was among weapons involved in the "very frightening" incident in Spalding, which saw a parked Volvo car damaged with golf clubs and bats.
Officers were called at 10.42pm on Friday to "reports of crowds of people making threats and damaging a vehicle" in Station Street, and chasing a man from his vehicle into a property while threatening him with weapons.
The Lincolnshire force said in a statement: "The exact amount of people and vehicles involved are still unknown, with reports ranging from between one vehicle with six people, to three vehicles and up to 20 people.
"During this incident, there were members of the public nearby. Armed officers were immediately deployed and confirmed the safety of the man in question, and have since been carrying out inquiries in the town.
"The incident ended without reports of any injuries, but we have not ended our involvement and there will be an active police presence in the area today and overnight."
Police are appealing for people to come forward with mobile phone, CCTV or ring doorbell footage of the disorder.
The police statement continued: "At the moment, our goal is to understand more about exactly what happened and the reasons why, as well to identify any potential suspects.
"There were also rumours circulating of a firearm, but this has not been confirmed to police. That information is, of course, very concerning, and we would urge anyone who might have information about a firearm or other offensive weapons, and the people who might own it, to contact us."
