A31 shut after vehicle fire spreads to nearby heathland

Fire crews received more than 160 calls about the blaze, which broke out on Sunday (09 August)

The A31 has been shut near to Ringwood, Hampshire, following a huge vehicle fire which spread to nearby heathland.

26 fire engines were called to the dual carriageway at around 17:20BST on Sunday night (09 August).

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue said: "We understand residents in the area may be concerned. At present, there is no need for any properties to be evacuated.

"Should this situation change, affected households will be contacted directly."

The road remained closed in both directions between the M27 J2 and the A338 at Ringwood on Monday morning.

National Highways said: "National Highways contractors are also in attendance and have advised that there is significant damage to the road surface and road safety barrier as a result of the fire and a subsequent oil spillage from the burnt out vehicle.

"The road is likely to be closed into the day, and at this stage there is no estimated time for re-opening."
