20000 homes across Central and Southern Scotland without power

Twenty thousand homes across Central and Southern Scotland are without power as Storm Éowyn batters the country.

A red weather warning for wind came into force for the Central Belt at 10am and has now been extended to cover all of Dumfries and Galloway.

SP Energy Networks says it has engineers on the ground working to restore electricity as quickly as possible.

District General Manager, Aileen Rourke, said: “With red and amber warnings issued across the country we moved teams and resources into place ahead of Storm Éowyn approaching and contacted vulnerable customers on our Priority Services Register to give support.

“We’ve seen wind speeds of almost 90mph with conditions remaining treacherous, hampering our ability to assess and repair damage.

"As soon as it is safe to do so, our engineers will be out in the field working to get the power back on for people as soon as we can."

People without power should call the national emergency helpline on 105.
