After iconic roles in shows such as Game of Thrones and Joan, English actress Sophie Turner is now set to follow in the footsteps of Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander, as she's been cast to play Lara Croft in Prime Video's new Tomb Raider series.

Created by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the brains behind shows such as Fleabag and Killing Eve, production for Tomb Raider will begin this month (January), and now further casting details have been announced.

What is the Tomb Raider series?

Bosses are so far keeping tight-lipped about the plot of the new series, but they have revealed the series is based on the iconic Tomb Raider video game franchise, which follows the adventures of world-famous archaeologist and adventurer Lara Croft.

Vernon Sanders, Head of Global Television, Prime Video & Amazon MGM Studios, said: “Lara Croft is one of the most recognizable and iconic video game characters of all time. We are thrilled to have the wonderfully talented Sophie Turner bring this character to life who is defined by her courage, strength, and unshakable resolve. Led by the brilliant Phoebe Waller-Bridge, this series will honor the beloved Tomb Raider legacy while delivering fresh adventures to fans worldwide.”

I can’t wait for you all to see what we have cooking.”

Phoebe Waller-Bridge added: "I’m so excited to announce the formidable Sophie Turner as our Lara alongside this phenomenal creative team. It’s not very often you get to make a show of this scale with a character you grew up loving. Everyone on board is wildly passionate about Lara and are all as outrageous, brave, and hilarious as she is. Get your artifacts out... Croft is coming...”
