Emily in Paris: A recap of the popular Netflix series
It's been renewed for a sixth season
Last updated 12 hours ago
Arriving on Netflix for the first time back in 2020, Emily in Paris is the popular romcom series that follows a young American go-getter as she relocates to the largest city in France. Through five series (so far), we've followed Emily Cooper's hilarious highs and lows as the marketing executive falls in love, follows her career dreams and makes friends for life in Paris.
But how much of series one to five do you remember? And will she finally find happiness with her on-off petit ami, Gabriel? Ahead of the much-anticipated sixth season, we've put together a handy episode guide, to remind you what's happened so far...
Check out what happened in Emily in Paris series 1-5:
Series 1
In the first episode of Emily in Paris, we meet Chicago-based marketing executive Emily Cooper (Lily Collins). After Emily's boss Madeline (Kate Walsh) finds herself unable to fulfill her plans to relocate to the Paris branch of their marketing firm, Emily steps in — despite being unable to speak a word of French!
When Emily arrives, she is made to feel less than welcome by her new boss, Sylvie (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu), who heads up the Paris branch, Savoir. But it's not all bad, as Emily meets her new soul-sister Mindy (Ashley Park) on a park bench, and so begins a beautiful Parisian friendship.
Series 1
Emily moves in to her new apartment, but after an awkward mishap which sees her mixing up the door numbers, she meets her VERY handsome neighbour, Gabriel (Lucas Bravo) — a local chef.
Emily sets up a new Instagram page named — you got it — @emilyinparis, to document her big adventure. She later splits up with her boyfriend, Doug (Roe Hartrampf), as he struggles to come to terms with the idea of a long-distance relationship.
Series 1
The cultural differences between the US and France become an issue for Emily, who is shocked to see a naked female model shown walking across the Pont Alexandre III in an advertisement, while suited men watched on. Arguing it would be considered sexist in America, Emily is surprised to be told the French marketing executives in her team considered it "sexy" not "sexist".
Emily also accidentally insults new boss Sylvie at a glamorous soirée for a perfume brand, by trying to take charge of client negotiations. Meanwhile, engagement on her Insta channel starts to blow up.
Series 1
Through work, Emily meets Champagne vineyard heiress Camille (Camille Razat) — who later comes to Emily's rescue when she's belittled in a flower shop. The blossoming friendship warms Emily — but later, when Emily finally makes her move on the gorgeous Gabriel (and it's reciprocated BTW), it's revealed Camille is HIS GIRLFRIEND.
Series 1
Riddled with guilt, Emily tries to distance herself from Camille and Gabriel. But Camille is so (sickly) sweet, that she invites Emily along to date night, where things take a huge turn for Emily's career.
After being disciplined at work for giving away social media coverage for free, Emily is preparing for her online demise. But after snapping pics at the immersive Van Gogh Starry Night exhibit she third wheels at, Emily unintentionally impresses a Savoir client, who asks Emily to turn her Insta into a channel for client promotion.
Series 1
Emily attempts to sign a new client for Savoir, in the shape of eccentric fashion designer, Pierre Cadault (Jean-Christophe Bouvet) — but the meeting doesn't go to plan, after Pierre spots Emily's fluffy heart bag charm, and concludes she's "tacky".
Down on her luck — after Sylvie blames Emily's "American aesthetic" for the company's loss of a new client — the young marketing exec heads to a local cafe-bar to unwind. There she meets Thomas (Julien Floreancig) — a philosophy professor who attempts to turn her day around.
Despite being easy on the eye, a double date with Camille and Gabriel later shines the truth on Emily's new love interest. Thomas shows himself to be somewhat of a snob, looking down on Emily and her friends, and even being rude to the waiter. Major red flag!
Series 1
Emily is tasked with babysitting an American actress who is in town to promote a high-end watch brand for Savoir. Proving a little harder to keep tabs on than first hoped, Emily ends up in a bar with Brooklyn (Carlson Young), who eventually heads home with a man she's just met — wearing a €2 million diamond watch that she was supposed to return for an upcoming press event!
Emily enlists Gabriel to help hunt for Brooklyn and the watch. And although the sexual tension between the two is palpable, they manage to keep their hands off each other long enough to track the movie star down to a nearby hotel — and the watch is returned JUST in time for the brand event.
Series 1
Emily heads to Camille's family chateau, where she comes up with a clever social plan to shift some lower quality champagne from their vineyard. Emily markets the champagne as 'spraying bottles', encouraging buyers to purchase one to drink, and one to spray in celebration.
The work trip becomes a little tense though, as Gabriel joins them, and the spark between them continues to burn. Emily then appears to make Gabriel jealous, when she sleeps with Camille's younger brother, Timothée (Victor Meutelet). Meanwhile, Camille's mother attempts to invest in Gabe's dreams of buying a restaurant, but he declines. He later drops the bomb that he's moving to Normandy, where restaurants are more affordable.
Series 1
In the final episode of series one, Gabriel and Camille decide to split — due to her unwillingness to follow him to Normandy. Now a single man, he's honest with his feelings about our Emily, and the pair spend his last night in Paris together. But the following morning, Emily bumps into Gabe at the cafe. Having secured investment from Savoir client, Antoine Lambert (William Abadie), he's purchased a restaurant in Paris, and will be sticking around after all!
The season ends on a cliffhanger text from pal Camille, who writes to Emily: 'I just heard from Gabriel. He's staying in Paris. Can we talk??'
Series 2
The start of season two sees Emily throw herself into her friendship with Camille, still feeling guilty for her night of passion with Gabriel. Despite a short fling with Pierre Cadault's nephew Mathieu (Charles Martins), Emily is receiving 'miss you' texts from Gabriel.
Mindy, Camille and Emily head on a trip to St Tropez (initially planned as a romantic getaway with now-ex Mathieu). There, they stumble across Sylvie, discovering she has a secret HUSBAND — who she maintains an open relationship with! While in St Tropez, Emily also continues to work on a bold marketing campaign for Pierre Cadault, which sees his face emblazoned on suitcases!
Series 2
Gabriel cooks up a storm for Emily's birthday meal, which is laid out beautifully on the streets of Paris. But it all kicks off when Camille finds Gabriel's personalised (and seasoned) omelette pan in Emily's apartment. She quickly pieces together the evidence and realises the pair have been keeping a romantic rendezvous from her. Camille makes quite the scene, smashing her champagne glass and calling Emily a traitor in front of their friends.
Series 2
Emily attempts some damage control, and writes a letter to Camille apologising for what happened with Gabriel. The pair also come face-to-face at work, as Emily's working on a campaign which involves Camille's family firm — and the atmosphere's pretty frosty, despite the Parisian summer sun.
Meanwhile, a dishy British man (played by Tinsel Town's Lucien Laviscount) gets Emily's attention, after they're paired together in their French language class. They begin to bicker, after Alfie shows little interest in the Paris Emily's come to love (and he's been forced to work).
Series 2
Emily is thrilled when Camille reaches out to rebuild their friendship, but it comes at a cost. Camille wants them both to pledge never to date Gabriel again, which Emily reluctantly agrees to. Meanwhile Emily works on a campaign for Gabe's new restaurant, Chez Lavaux, which is now officially open.
Elsewhere, a romantic spark ignites between Emily and Alfie, who spend a day in Paris together — both showing the other how they enjoy the city most.
Series 2
Things are going really well for Emily and Alfie who head on another date, meanwhile Emily continues working on promoting Gabriel's restaurant. Feathers are ruffled when investor Antoine proposes to turn the restaurant into a sexy nightclub, while Gabe is looking to attract a more high-end client. They find a middle-ground, allowing a party atmosphere from 11pm onwards.
Camille is playing nice with both Emily and Gabriel (and Gabe is OBVIOUSLY pining for Emily, who is sticking to her pact with Camille) and Sylvie has fallen for a young photographer!
Series 2
Madeline arrives in Paris to bring Savoir more in line with its American sister company, but Sylvie feels like the walls are closing in on the French firm. It's revealed Sylvie has been undercharging clients in exchange for personal favours — and tensions are heightened in the office.
Meanwhile Emily is gutted to discover Camille has not been sticking to her side of the pact, and has been meeting with Gabriel behind her back. She leans in to her relationship with Alfie, who admits his time in Paris is almost up, but suggests they try a long-distance relationship — with a colour-coded schedule to help them plan their time between London and France!
Series 2
Emily realises she's in love with Gabriel, but when she goes to his apartment to tell him, she's greeted by both him and Camille, who tell her they're back together!
At work, Sylvie, Luc (Bruno Gouery) and Julien (Samuel Arnold) dramatically quit Savoir, after Madeline forces a company restructure. Surprisingly, Sylvie invites Emily on their mission to start a new firm. It leaves Emily at a crossroads — deciding whether to return to the US when her time at the Paris branch is up, or stick around for good, working for Sylvie instead.
The season ends with Emily on the phone, saying: "Hi Sylvie, it's me. I've made my decision."
Series 3
Series three begins with Emily having NOT decided between the two jobs — but is, in fact, working both! Completely in the dark, Madeline and Sylvie both ask Emily to attend a meal inside the Eiffel Tower (wow!) to schmooze a client, but Emily gets caught out when attempting to do both, after Madeline finds her at the table with Sylvie and the new Agence Grateau crew. Sylvie is shocked Emily hadn't handed her notice in at Savoir, and fires her.
Meanwhile Gabriel and Camille are well and truly back ON, which causes awkwardness for Emily. And things go from bad to worse for her love life, when Alfie pretty much dumps her after she fails to turn up to his farewell party.
Series 3
Emily continues her position in Madeline's team, but things get competitive between the two marketing firms, particularly when Sylvie and Madeline turn up to an event in the same outfit! After reminding Sylvie that her and the team signed non-compete agreements, it becomes apparent it won't be easy for the new French firm to get off the ground.
Meanwhile Emily discovers Alfie didn't head home to London. He accepted a position working for Antoine, meaning he's staying in Paris after all! To win him back, Emily takes to the stage at one of Mindy's gigs to sing Burt Bacharach's 'Alfie' — and the loveable Londoner is won over.
Series 3
Savoir struggles to operate without a full team, and Sylvie's got her eye on the almost-empty office for her new firm. With some clever local knowledge about labour laws and the building lease, she manages to outmaneuver Madeline, who accepts defeat and closes up shop, leaving Agence Grateau to claim the building as their own. Emily is invited to join Madeline back in Chicago, but makes the decision to stay in Paris, even without a job, considering herself 'funemployed'.
Trying to find a way to make money, Emily live streams her adventures in Paris — and starts ticking some things off her bucket list. She also manages to secure a few shifts waitressing in Gabriel's restaurant, but that ends BADLY when her lack of French language leads her to serve mushrooms to a man with a severe allergy.
Series 3
While Gabriel is consistently busy at the restaurant, Camille seeks company in an artist at her gallery, called Sofia (Melia Kreiling) — and there's an obvious chemistry between them.
At the Agence Grateau office, Sylvie notices something missing from their firm, and it becomes apparent it's Emily — and her weird and wonderful ideas. She soon offers Emily a job, which she gratefully accepts.
Series 3
Mindy catches the eye of Nicolas de Léon (Paul Forman) — the heir to the JVMA conglomerate which has bought up much of Paris. It causes upset for Mindy's boyfriend (and fellow busker) Benoît (Kevin Dias), and an argument ensues when a HUGE bouquet of roses arrives for her.
Meanwhile Emily is on fire at work, finding herself nominated for 'La Liste' — a list of influential people in Paris — despite originally trying to get Sylvie on it! Awks. And at Alfie's housewarming party, Emily accidentally catches Camille and Sofia sharing a kiss, behind Gabriel's back.
Series 3
After selling the ownership of his company to the soulless conglomerate JVMA, Pierre Cadault soon finds himself at risk of being replaced by a younger model. But Sylvie promises to protect him at all costs.
Elsewhere, Emily supports Gabriel, who is going through issues in his relationship with Camille. He's also desperately striving for a Michelin star. Meanwhile Emily is feeling insecure in her relationship with Alfie and Nicolas causes friction between Emily and Mindy.
Series 3
A proposal of marriage from Camille to Gabriel leads to a Champagne engagement party — and then a shock impromptu wedding! But when the times comes to say their vows, Camille has a change of heart, realising that Gabriel is in love with Emily. And she flees the alter in tears. Alfie, devastated by the news, also breaks up with Emily — leaving Gabriel and Emily both single, and finally able to reconnect.
But of course, nothing is that simple in the life of Emily in Paris, so as the future starts to look a little more certain for Emily and Gabriel, Camille returns to drop the news that she's pregnant with his child!
Series 4
Emily and Alfie are thrown together in an awkward reunion for work purposes, but it only cements their reasoning that they shouldn't be together. For the campaign (and the cameras), Emily and Alfie share a kiss, which upsets Gabriel. But he's got enough of his own drama going on, with Camille pregnant... and now missing too!
It's later discovered that Camille's hiding at the apartment belonging to former secret flame, Sofia. Elsewhere, Mindy and her band are trying out for Eurovision!
Series 4
The truth is revealed about Camille and Sofia, which results in Gabriel storming off — cross with Emily for keeping their affair from him. Emily tracks Camille to a rowing boat in the middle of a (very picturesque) pond. A heated argument ends in the girls both falling in the water.
Elsewhere in Paris, Mindy discovers her boyfriend Nicolas' father and JVMA boss, Louis de Léon (Pierre Deny), has been sexually harassing women in the couture closet. Sylvie provides a quote for an exposé about it, despite her husband Laurent's conflicting business interests with JVMA.
Series 4
Free of their doomed relationships, Emily and Gabriel are finally able to give things a good go. But despite Gabe's commitment to be a good father to Camille's baby, his ex soon discovers her earlier pregnancy test had shown a false positive — and she's not pregnant after all. Camille keeps this new information to herself though.
Meanwhile, Camille and girlfriend Sofia have been crashing in Gabriel's apartment, not leaving much space for Emily and her man to enjoy their new relationship. When they attempt to oust them by complaining to the building owners, Camille instead manages to blag an apartment of her own within the same complex...right next door to Emily! Whoops.
Series 4
After her Christmas plans are thrown into turmoil when a huge storm cancels her flight to Chicago, Emily ends up at a ski resort in the French Alps with Gabriel, Camille and Camille's family instead. Feeling like a third wheel, Emily finds herself stuck halfway down a slope when Gabe rushes to be by Camille's side as she skis — still believing she's carrying his child. But Emily is rescued by a handsome Italian (Eugenio Franceschini), who later turns out to be the heir of cashmere company Muratori — one of Emily new clients.
Series 4
In series four, we're introduced to Laurent's "surprise" American daughter Geneviève (Thalia Besson). In an attempt to bond with her, Sylvie invites Geneviève to temp at the marketing firm — but it soon rubs Emily up the wrong way, when she appears to be mirroring Emily's style, at work and at home.
Elsewhere, Mindy has broken up with Nicolas, after he mocked her attempts to perform for Eurovision, and Gabriel is hoping to improve his English to win Emily back. But he soon becomes the next thing in Emily's life that Geneviève wants to make her own.
Series 4
Emily runs into Marcello from the French Alps during a polo match — and he very quickly sweeps her off her feet. With Gabriel distracted by Geneviève, Emily and Marcello spend a night wandering the streets of Paris — and the Italian soon makes his move, kissing Emily and inviting her to come back to Rome with him. Of course... She says yes!
Meanwhile, Mindy makes her cabaret debut — and finds herself stuck between Nicolas and Benoît yet again. After her entry is disqualified from Eurovision, she decides to fly out to Italy to see Emily, rediscovering her love of busking on the streets of Rome.
Series 4
Sylvie follows Emily to Rome, which upsets Marcello, who believes she's using him to sign his family's wool and cashmere business as a client. Marcello's mother, however, is impressed by Emily — and encourages her to head up a new branch of the agency in Rome. Excited by the prospect, Emily agrees, moving in to a new Italian apartment and changing her Insta handle to signal her new adventure.
Back in Paris, Gabriel finally discovers the truth about Camille's pregnancy. And also starts to see how Geneviève has been manipulating him to get what she wants. He does, however, FINALLY earn that Michelin Star he's been dreaming of — but wishes he was able to celebrate with Emily.
Series 5
Now the appointed head of the new Rome office for Agence Grateau, Emily is settling in to Italian life, with new beau Marcello by her side. Sporting a new bob and a renewed work ethic, Emily gets to work promoting Marcello's family brand, Muratori — but there's soon friction with Marcello's mum — and head of the Cashmere company — Antonia (Anna Galiena).
Emily is completely unaware of Gabriel's arrival in Rome to win her back, and is looking loved up with Marcello when he appears. Back in Paris, Mindy and Alfie seem to be developing a surprising spark.
Series 5
Genevieve is up to her old tricks again in series 5, and has been stirring the pot when it comes to Alfie's growing connection with Mindy. But it's not baseless rumours... the pair really HAVE been getting close. And when Mindy enlists Emily's former flame to help her practise for an upcoming dance competition, the pair share a passionate kiss.
In Italy, Emily plans an exclusive launch for Muratori's Paradiso perfume, but the secret location is sabotaged when Sylvie's new investor, Princess Jane (Minnie Driver) drops a pin on live stream to her HUGE following. It results in Marcello's family village, Solitano, being completely overrun by tourists, collapsing the infrastructure and ruining its peace — possibly forever. Antonia holds Emily wholly responsible. She's fired from the account on the spot, and also discovers Marcello had a game plan of his own — he'd been working with his mum to prepare for a JVMA takeover. Marcello tells Emily "for one of us to win, one of us has to lose".
Series 5
Emily chooses to drown her sorrows in a F.R.I.E.N.D.S quiz at an American pub (in Italy), where she meets US Consular Officer, Jake (One Tree Hill's Bryan Greenberg). Jake takes Emily to the embassy, where she tucks in to American snacks to cure her homesickness. When Jake leans in for a kiss under the 4th of July fireworks, Emily tells him she's currently "kiss-proof", with her feelings for Marcello (and maybe Gabriel?!) still fresh.
Series 5
Emily returns to Paris, where she sets her sights on marketing Gabriel's new menu. Meanwhile Mindy and Alfie are now having a full blown love affair, but despite numerous attempts to tell Emily themselves, the news eventually makes its way to her through others — and Emily makes it clear she feels betrayed.
Genevieve takes great pleasure in breaking the news to Emily, after she's sent to fire the latest addition to Agence Grateau due to her constant game playing. Even Sylvie, who previously defended her husband's daughter, is keen to see the back of her.
Series 5
After a few days of uncomfortable silence, Emily finally agrees to forgive Mindy for sleeping with Alfie behind her back — and the pair head to Paris Pride, where Mindy is performing. While they're there, they spend time with Nicolas (who's back on the scene after convincing Mindy he's changed) and Marcello, who is back in France, after ditching his family firm. The four work together on a new business plan, and they soon reignite old flames too.
Later the four of them team up again to sign a new high-end fashion designer, who Emily gets close to after bonding over his rare breed of dog (Emily's dad bred them when she was young). Despite Mindy getting things back on track with Nicolas, tensions with Alfie continue to grow — especially when he comes on board with Nicolas' business idea as a consultant.
Series 5
Emily heads back to Italy to see Marcello show his new fashion collection. With Mindy in tow, the pair tour the sights of Venice, something Emily has dreamed of doing since she was five. While there, Marcello's mother arrives to announce she's offering him the family business (despite earlier threatening to sue him for trademark infringement), but it ends in upset when Marcello decides to stay in Italy for good, and Emily realises she wants to go home to Paris. As the pair split, Mindy receives a marriage proposal from Nico on a canal boat. Alfie's devastated, as he was hoping the pair could reconcile.
After returning home to Paris, Emily is sent a postcard by Gabriel, who asks her to meet him in Greece. He writes: 'I'm lost at sea without you'. Things are looking up at work too, with Sylvie thrilled to have Emily back at the Paris branch. But financial difficulties sees Agence Grateau bring Princess Jane on board as Co-Head of the company — news which doesn't go down well with Emily!
